- Focus on all important chapters covered in Pharmacology as 25- 30% questions are asked from this section.
- Around 4-5 numerical problems are asked every year so practice solving these questions.
- Some questions from organic and physical chemistry based on 10+2 level are also asked.
The number of entrance examinations has increased manifold over the years. So now students should prepare for the exam with double enthusiasm. Cracking GPAT 2021 requires hard work as well as smart work and determination to move beyond difficult issues.
GPAT 2021 is a general entrance exam, a portal for applicants seeking admission to the M-pharm program offered by the best pharmacy collage in India. This is a very competitive exam due to the increasing scope of the pharmacy sector.
Clearing GPAT 2021 is not an easy task unless you are preparing for the exam. In this article we have given some tips and tricks for preparing for GPAT 2021 which will help you to perform well in the exam.
GPAT Exam Pattern and Syllabus

- The duration of the exam is 3 hours. Every correct answer is awarded +4 marks and a penalty of 1 mark is charged for wrong answers.
- The exam has questions based on topics covered at the B Pharm level.
- Applicants should mainly cover chapters from 5 main sections- Pharm Analysis, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology, and Pharmaceutics.
GPAT Preparation Tips as per various Subjects
GPAT cracking was easier when it was formerly taken from IITs with GATE. It was very philosophical and contained some questions that were repeated every year. However, now the level of invincibility in the examination has increased. That is why students should study all subjects in depth. Below are the preparation instructions that candidates can use for each section.
Pharmacognosy
This is a very theoretical section. Applicants should read all the chapters more and make subtle notes on it. These subtle notes can help repeat at the last minute
Analysis of last year's exam papers shows that the most frequently asked drugs in this category are senna, morphine and vinca. Individuals should study all the concepts of these medicines; Understand their mechanisms and their effects and uses. It is better to give time to pharmacognosis again and again so that the candidates will not forget the concepts and details.
Important topics in this section are-
- Glycosides
- Alkaloids
- Volatile Oils
- Resins
- Tannins
- Carbohydrates
- Tissue culture
- Herbal drugs
Recommended books for Pharmacognosy:
- Pharmacognosy by C K Kokate
- The complete guide for Pharmacognosy by Trease and Evans
Pharmacology
Many students find this section very interesting. The topics in this section carry a lot of weight in GPAT 2020. Aspirants studied drug interactions and mechanisms, as well as unique side effects of drugs (as opposed to similar side effects on the body). For drug classification lessons, candidates can use acronyms to remember names. for example:
- Semisynthetic derivatives: Atropine Methonitrate, Homatropine, Hyoscine butyl bromide, Ipratropium bromide, Tiotropium Bromide (AHITH)
- Quaternary compounds: Propantheline, Clidimium, Oxyphenonium, Pipenzolate methyl bromide, Isopropamide, Glycopyrrolate (PCO PIG)
Important topics in this section are:
- Oncology (drugs for chemotherapy, upcoming technologies, etc.)
- Neuropharmacology and rare diseases
- Cardiovascular and Blood products
Recommended books:
- Essential of Medical Pharmacology by K D Tripathi
Pharmaceutical Analysis
This section is relatively simple and only requires understanding the concept. Those interested should practice solving numerical problems. Note the formulas and combine them.
Important topics are:
- UV, IR and NMR
- Mass Spectroscopy
- Chromatography
- Polarography and Polarimetry
- Flame Photometer
- Conductometry
- Amperometry
- Potentiometry
Recommended books:
- Spectroscopy and Titration by Chatwal
- Chromatography by Remington
Pharmaceutical Chemistry
The questions asked from this section are very basic and require only conceptual clarity. Applicants should focus on organic chemistry in this section. Study electrophilic, nucleophilic reactions (transformation and addition) and intermediate reactions.
Important topics are:
- SAR of steroids
- Nomenclature and a chemical moiety of the medicinal drugs
Recommended books:
- Basic Organic Chemistry by Morrison Boyd
- Medicinal chemistry by S N Pandey
Pharmaceutics
This department is GPAT. This must be in order for an affiliate program to promote any affiliate. Candidates should begin this section by studying the process of making tablets and emulsions. They have to undergo various techniques of disinfection. This problem can also lead to some numerical problems. Individuals should focus on the following topics:
- Pharmaceutical jurisprudence & ethics
- Surface and Interfacial Phenomena
- Rheology
- Kinetics and Drug Stability
- Biopharmaceutics & Pharmacokinetics
Recommended books:
- The Theory and Practice of Industrial Pharmacy by Liebermann and Lachman
General Preparation tips
- Spectroscopy per year - 6-8 questions based on mass spectrometry, UV, IR and NMR spectroscopy. Students should read these chapters well.
- Make separate notes for medication classification and medication schedule. Generally, 3-4- on herbal medicines. The question is asked every year to go to the chapter on herbal and indigenous medicine.
- The frequency of numerical problems in the GPAT is increasing every year. Individuals should try this problem to get good marks in GPAT 2020. Doses are asked based on the age of most statistical biopharmaceuticals, depression in freezing point, pattern of charges, and body weight.
- Applicants are required to solve mock papers and previous year question papers which helps them to understand the pattern of GPAT 2020 better.
- Identify focus areas through old question papers for other subjects like hospital pharmacy. Make notes of key points collected from the reference books
